Capacity development in the marine context: what are the main challenges and how can we approach them?

This was our key question to the audience during the jointly organized side event* “Capacity development for sustainable ocean governance: Lessons learned from academia, policy and practice” during the first UN Ocean Conference in 2017.

Participants from a wide range of organizations discussed the relevance of capacity development for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14 – Life below water) and shared their practical experiences on enhancing capacities for the sustainable management and the use of the ocean and its resources. Many of the participants were practitioners or experts in the field of capacity development themselves and contributed valuable insights according to their own experiences.

Training on Marine Spatial Planning in the Benguela Current region

The Blue Solutions Initiative continues the successful cooperation with the MARISMA project in the Benguela Current region: after jointly developing the introductory video on Marine Spatial Planning  (MSP), the two projects have now convened a Blue Planning in Practice (BPiP) training on MSP. From 16 to 20 October  2017, 20 practitioners, academics and regional capacity development organization representatives from Angola, Namibia and South Africa participated in the BPiP training in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
