The Fourth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC4) will be an important milestone dealing with marine conservation before reaching the 2020 deadline for the Aichi Targets. The congress will take place from September 4 to 8, 2017 in La Serena-Coquimbo (Chile). With the motto Marine Protected Areas: Bringing the people and ocean together, it intends to highlight the intricate nature of ocean-human relationship and the benefits of marine protected areas (MPAs) and the ocean for many people who depend on their ecosystem services.
The Blue Solutions Initiative looks forward to participating in and contributing to the congress. We will be present at the IUCN Ocean Pavilion and will host two knowledge cafés and two workshops. Our events will focus on solution-oriented approaches to MPA management and will feature successful real-life examples from the PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet platform.
Our activities at IMPAC4 at a glance:
Knowledge Café: Solutions for scaling shared and community-led MPA governance
Tuesday, September 5, 4:30 to 5:30 pm – Terraza Spa, Table 4
The Knowledge Café will provide an opportunity for informal, interactive knowledge sharing and learning on community-based and participatory governance of MPAs. Learn about existing blue solutions and lessons they offer for wider application in various geographic contexts. The solution providers will act as group moderators and will finally phrase concrete needs to support the successful establishment and management of community-governed MPAs.
Featured solution: Kick-starting marine conservation through local fisheries management
Workshop: Solutions for MPA financing – success stories and their potential for broader application
Thursday, September 7, 10 to 11 am – Bahia 2
In this workshop, we will share success stories for MPA financing. In a ‘fishbowl’ discussion, we will debate enabling factors for an uptake of these blue solutions in new contexts as well as key success factors for a long-term financing of MPA sites and systems.
Featured solution: Financial mechanism for coastal forest restoration
Workshop: Large-scale MPAs – Success stories and learning for the way forward
Thursday, September 7, 11:30 am to 1 pm – Pavilion Room
This session will highlight blue solutions for designating and managing large-scale MPAs. We will focus on key success factors for ensuring effective legal protection, science-based management and ensuring alignment of sustainable development and conservation objectives through large-scale protection. The enabling factors for an uptake of the solutions will be discussed in groups.
