Global knowledge exchange and capacity development for marine and coastal biodiversity
Blue Solutions is a global project implemented in partnership by GIZ, GRID-Arendal, IUCN and UN Environment. It is financed by the German Environment Ministry (BMU) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI).
Marine and coastal ecosystems are fundamental for human well-being and provide a range of valuable services. Unfortunately, these ecosystems are highly at risk. Under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework, the sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems is a priority for action. The Blue Solutions Initiative works on several topics relevant in the conservation and sustainable use of the resources that come with marine and coastal biodiversity. This work is conducted through capacity building and global knowledge exchange in collaboration with partner projects of the implementing organizations as well as other establishments all around the world.
Blue Solutions is currently closely collaborating with the government of Costa Rica and the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) on developing and implementing strategies for marine spatial planning. The project impacts and successes are continuously shared in international policy processes such as CBD COPs, SBSTTAs or in the context of contributing to achieving SDG14.
